Praha wall
Praha je hlavní a současně největší město České republiky. Leží mírně na sever od středu Čech na řece Vltavě, uvnitř Středočeského kraje, jehož je správním centrem, ale jako samostatný kraj není jeho součástí. Je sídlem velké části státních institucí a množství dalších organizací a firem. Sídlí zde prezident republiky, vláda, ústřední státní orgány a Vrchní soud. Mimoto je Praha sídlem řady dalších úřadů, jak ústředních, tak i územních samosprávných celků; sídlí zde též ústředí většiny politických stran a centrály téměř všech církví, náboženských a dalších sdružení s celorepublikovou působností registrovaných v ČR. Do dnešní podoby se Praha vyvíjela jedenáct století. Coby historická metropole Čech byla v minulosti sídelním městem českých knížat a králů, římsko-německých císařů a hlavním městem Československa. V současnosti se rozkládá na území 496 čtverečních kilometrů a má 1 242 002 obyvatel (údaj ČSÚ k 30. červnu 2009). Pražská metropolitní oblast měla v roce 2004 (podle Eurostatu) 1 964 750 obyvatel.

Prag ist die Hauptstadt und zugleich bevölkerungsreichste Stadt der Tschechischen Republik. Gleichzeitig ist Prag selbstständige Verwaltungseinheit. Die Umgebung der Stadt ist seit der Frühgeschichte dicht bevölkert. Die slawische Besiedlung erfolgte im 6. Jahrhundert, nach einer über 500 Jahre langen germanischen Periode (Markomannen). Nach der Anlage zweier Burgen durch die Přemysliden im 9. und 10. Jahrhundert kamen jüdische und deutsche Kaufleute hinzu. Um 1230 wurde Prag zur Residenzstadt des Königreichs Böhmen und im 14. Jahrhundert als Hauptstadt des Heiligen Römischen Reiches zu einem politisch-kulturellen Zentrum Mitteleuropas.

Praga (Praha in ceco, in IPA: [ˈpraɦa]) è la capitale e la più grande città della Repubblica Ceca. Centro politico e culturale della Boemia e dello stato ceco per oltre 1100 anni, tra il XIV e il XV secolo fu anche capitale del Sacro Romano Impero. Tra i suoi soprannomi vanno ricordati La madre delle città (Praga mater urbium, or "Praha matka měst" in ceco), Città delle mille guglie (Stověžatá Praha in ceco) e Città d'Oro (Zlaté město in ceco)[1]. Praga è un centro culturale e turistico di fama mondiale. Il suo centro storico, visitato ogni anno da più di 4 milioni di visitatori, è stato incluso nel 1992 nella lista dei patrimoni dell'umanità dell'UNESCO. Situata sul fiume Moldava (Vltava), conta approssimativamente 1,3 milioni di abitanti, 1,9 con l'area metropolitana.

For many decades during the Gothic and Renaissance eras, Prague was the permanent seat of two Holy Roman Emperors and thus was also the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Today, the city proper is home to more than 1.2 million people, while its metropolitan area is estimated to have a population of over 1.9 million.[5] Since 1992, the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, making the city one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, receiving more than 4.1 million international visitors annually, as of 2009[update].[6]
